Community Unites to Commemorate Greek Independence Day

The 25th of March holds deep historical significance for both Greece and Cyprus, marking the beginning of the Greek War of Independence against Ottoman rule in 1821. In Greece, this day is celebrated as Independence Day, with nationwide festivities, parades, and commemorative ceremonies.

In Melbourne, the Victorian Cypriot Community demonstrated their unity and cultural pride by gathering at the Australian Hellenic Memorial at the Shrine of Remembrance. Community groups stood together to honour this historic event, marching in solidarity as a single group. Their presence reflected the strength and cohesion of the Cypriot community in Victoria.

The event was attended by representatives from multiple organisations, including:

  • Cyprus Community Northern Suburbs Melbourne
  • SEKA Victoria: Justice for Cyprus
  • Cyprus Community of Melbourne and Victoria
  • Apostolos Andreas Cyprus Orthodox Community West Sunshine
  • Greek Cypriot Parent and Youth Club

The collective participation of these organisations highlights the enduring connection between Greece, Cyprus, and the Cypriot diaspora in Australia. The presidents of each community were acknowledged for their efforts in fostering unity and ensuring the significance of Greek Independence Day is honoured across generations.

As the community came together in remembrance and celebration, the resounding message was clear: the values of freedom and cultural heritage remain a source of pride and strength.
